The Bonfire
Kulturhavna Ålesund
THE BONFIRE is a permanent lighting sculpture located in the heart of the new Kulturhavna in Ålesund. As a signal and reinforced identity for the town, the 800 kg and 5 m diameter work was officially unveiled January 2025 in memory of the historic city fire. The sculptural bonfire has become a gathering point for the entire area, where residents and visitors, adults and children, meet physically and share their stories. Publication and film was made to present the work. It gave also the start for new festival, Historical days.
Thematically, the lighting sculpture is a reminder of people`s fortitude and skill to rebuild the city after the fire that wiped out the wooden buildings, when hundreds of houses burned down and thousands of people lost everything they had. Like a Phoenix Bird the new city in stone rose from the ashes and became unique in an European context with its Jugend style.
Fire can destroy as we also have seen its consequences in our time with climate change and the earth's global warming. Fire is at the same time greatest breakthrough in his man`s development, who since time immemorial has learned to master and control it. The word comes from the Norse Eldr, and we find fire as a symbol of purification, transformation, the divine, one of the basic elements in many cultures throughout the ages. Eternal flames burn in many places on earth at monuments and memorials. In Greek mythology, Prometheus is the mythological culture hero who gave fire to humans in order to stand up to the gods. Could Prometheus – myth take on a new symbolism in our time, as a reminder of our shared responsibility to take care of the earth and show respect for the nature of which we are part of?
In our time, people have lived in isolation during the corona pandemic, and many have experienced various forms of loss. Having a place to go to and share common values, feeling part of society, has proven to be very important. The fire is also symbol for the spark that burns in each of us, which gives us the courage not to give up on our dreams when life gets tough.
The lighting sculpture is made of corten steel, a material which, in contact with rainfall and salty air, quickly acquires an outer layer of rust. This makes it more durable, as further rust is delayed. In addition, the surface will be given continuously changing shades, meant to represent an immaterial element, fire. The plates are designed as flames, while dynamic LED - light interacts with the material to create the experience of fire, flames in various warm shades of light. The lighting sculpture is designed so the public can walk between the “flames”, become part of the artwork and experience various lighting effects along the way. In the middle they find a bonfire and benches to sit around.
lLDSTEDET er en permanent lysskulptur plassert i hjertet av ny bydel i Ålesund, Kulturhavna. Som et signal og forsterket identitet for byen, ble den ca 800 kg tunge verket, 5 m i diameter, offisielt avduket januar 2025 til minne om den historiske bybrannen i 1904. Tenkt som samlingspunkt for hele området, er den skulpturelle bålplassen stedet der fastboende og besøkende, voksne og barn, møtes fysisk og forteller sine historier. Ildstedet fikk egen publikasjon og en presentasjonsfilm.Verket ga også startskuddet for ny festival, “Historiske dager”.
Tematisk er lysskulpturen en påminnelse om standhaftigheten og dyktigheten som måtte til for å gjenoppbygge byen etter brannen som utraderte trehusbebyggelsen, da hundrevis av hus brant ned og tusenvis av mennesker mistet alt. Som en Fugl Phoenix reiste den nye byen i stein seg fra asken og ble unik i europeisk sammenheng med sin Jugend stil.
Ilden kan ødelegge, slik vi også har sett I vår tid med klimaforandringer og global oppvarming. Men ild er samtidig mennesktes største gjennombrudd i sin utvikling, som siden uminnelige tider har lært å mestre og kontrollere den. Ordet kommer fra det norrøne Eldr, og vi finner ild som et symbol på renselse, forvandling, det guddommelige, et av grunnelementene i mange kulturer gjennom tidene. I gresk mytologi er Prometheus den mytologiske kulturhelten som ga ild til mennesker for å kunne stå opp mot gudene. Kunne Prometheus-myten få ny symbolikk I vår tid som en påminnelse om vårt felles ansvar for å ta vare på jorden og vise respect for naturen vi er en del av ?
I vår tid har mennesker levd isolert under korona-pandemien, og mange har opplevd ulik former for tap.
Å ha et sted å gå til der man samles om felles verdier, være del av samfunnet, har vist seg å være svært viktig. Ilden er også symbol for gnisten som brenner i hver enkelt av oss, som gir oss mot til ikke oppgi drømmene våre når livet blir vanskelig.
Lysskulpturen er laget av cortenstål, et materiale som i kontakt med mye nedbør og salt luft, får raskt et ytre rustlag. Det gjør det mer bestandig, da ytterligere rust blir forsinket. I tillegg vil overflaten få kontinuerlig skiftende nyanser, ment å representere et immaterielt element, ild. Platene er utformet som flammer, mens dynamisk LED RGBW lys samspiller med materialet for å skape opplevelsen av ild, flammer i ulike nyanser av varmt hvitt lys. Lysskulpturen er utformet slik at publikum skal kunne vandre mellom platene, bli en del av verket og oppleve ulike lyseffekter underveis. I midten finner de et bål og benker å sitte rundt bålet.
